THE ROMAN-STYLE KNIFE WITH THREE-CLICK RATCHET OPENING

The poet Giuseppe Giochino Belli quoted in one of his essays: "D'esse cristiano è puro cosa buona pe questo hai da portà sempre in zaccoccia er coltello arrotato" (Indeed, to be a Christian is a good thing, thus you must always carry a well-sharpened knife in your bag). In Italy, especially in the centre and south, knives were often used to assert one's position on trivial matters, but in the excitement of a game or in the throng of a village fête, they made tempers boil to the point of extreme and often fatal gestures. These "Roman-style" knives became especially widespread in the Papal States; real weapons up to half a metre long with a clear offensive purpose. Indeed, many of the constituent elements of the "Roman" knife testify to the offensive use that distinguished it: the razor-sharp blade, the decorations on the handle in the form of a lattice or herringbone pattern that served to improve the grip, the fixed spring locking system that prevented the knife from accidentally closing and which, when opened, emitted sinister clicks that heightened the attacker's aggressive stance. In fact, this sound was produced when the fight was about to begin as the blade made three harsh clicks on opening as it intercepted the spring movement, a warning to the opponent to stand and defend himself.
